George M. Lovejoy and his wife Margaret introduced their family to this region beginning in the 1920’s and purchased the Blue Heron Farm on Perry Road in Strafford in 1941. Beginning in the mid 1960’s, their son George M. Lovejoy, Jr., along with his wife Westy pieced together the current holdings through over 100 acquisitions. They created the Blue Hills Foundation in 1986, and over time contributed all of their property to the Foundation. Additional contributions of land to the Foundation have been made by abutters, including Tensie Cahill, George’s sister, over time. The Foundation is now governed by a board of directors which includes family members, scientists, educators and business professionals.
